Mesa Loves Everyone Statement on Expected Referendum Failure
Today, the Mesa Loves Everyone committee filed an uncontested complaint citing the lack of valid signatures gathered by the United for Mesa committee in an attempt to overturn the LGBTQ inclusive non-discrimination ordinance in Mesa by referring it to the ballot. After review of the evidence and documentation, the United for Mesa committee has conceded they do not have the required number of signatures necessary, effectively ending the referendum effort. Once a judgement is made, the non-discrimination ordinance will be allowed to go into effect, protecting all who live, work and visit Mesa from discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations.
The non-discrimination ordinance passed overwhelmingly with a 5-2 vote on March 1st, 2021 with support from Mesa Mayor John Giles. The ordinance is the result of years of dialogue with diverse stakeholders including businesses, faith leaders, community organizations and families.
“Today is a victory for the overwhelming majority of Mesa residents who support equality for all in our city,” said Mayor Giles. “This ordinance will give all residents and visitors a sense of belonging and will help us to attract opportunities to create a sustainable future and economy,” Mayor Giles concluded.
“We are profoundly moved and proud of the people of Mesa and the visionary leadership by Mayor Giles and Council,” said Angela Hughey, co-founder and President of ONE Community and a Mesa Loves Everyone committee member. “The passage of the ordinance was the result of years of dialogue and support from businesses, first responders, families, community organizations, faith leaders and more.”
