Arizona lawmaker introduces bills that would deny coverage for gender-reassignment surgeries
Glendale Republican Rep. Anthony Kern sees proposing HB 2293 and 2294, which would ban Medicaid holders and prison inmates from being covered for gender-reassignment surgeries, as a way to protect taxpayers. Kern is quoted saying he is "always in favor of personal freedoms … but never at the expense of the taxpayer" on an article by AZCentral.com. He believes that the state of California has set a "precedent" by being the first state to allow inmates to apply for state-covered reassignment surgeries.
Ashton Skinner, transgender-outreach coordinator for ONE Community called the bills "discriminatory and misguided."
