Signs ONE Community’s UNITY Pledge in support of equal treatment in employment, housing and public accommodations

(Phoenix, AZ) – Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman has signed the UNITY Pledge in support of full inclusion and equality in employment, housing, and public accommodations for all Arizonans, including gay and transgender people.

Superintendent Hoffman is the second statewide public official to sign the UNITY Pledge.  She joins over 20,000 individuals and over 3,200 businesses including GoDaddy, Yelp, American Airlines, the Arizona Diamondbacks, PetSmart, Fry’s Food Stores, and Coca-Cola in supporting a fully inclusive Arizona. Currently, only five Arizona cities have ordinances that ban discrimination; however, Arizona has no statewide laws that protect people from being fired based on their sexual orientation or gender identity or discriminated against in housing and public accommodations.

“No matter who you are or who you love, you are welcome in our schools,” said Superintendent Hoffman. “Signing the UNITY Pledge is an extension of our commitment to our staff, teachers and students to treat everyone with dignity and respect, and ensure equal opportunity for all,” concluded Hoffman.

“We are proud to welcome Superintendent Hoffman into the UNITY Pledge family,” said ONE Community and ONE Community Foundation President and Co-Founder, Angela Hughey. “She has been a fierce alley and leader on issues of equality.  She is making it safer for our students to be their authentic selves and succeed without fear.  We are grateful for her leadership,” concluded Hughey.
