Opponents of gay marriage, including Gov.Jan Brewer and Catholic bishops, criticized the judge's decision. Brewer said that with its decision, the court was eroding the people's power and overstepping its bounds. Brewer noted that Arizona voters in 2008 approved a state constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union of one man and one woman.

Ariz. businesses celebrate gay marriage with discounts, deals

Businesses in Arizona seized on the lift of the gay-marriage ban as a marketing opportunity, offering discounts to same-sex couples on everything from bar tabs to hair stylings to hotel stays.

Social-media accounts began humming with electronic deals for gay couples minutes after Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne announced he would not appeal a U.S. District Court decision striking down the state's ban.

"Let the honeymoon food come to you," read a promotion for Sunfare, a Deer Valley-area company that delivers specialized meals Valley-wide. "Sign up for Sunfare anytime this week for 25 percent off your first three family dinners." Read more »

Phoenix Women’s Chorus is a lesbian-identified chorus open and welcoming of all women identified singers. We are a non-audition chorus. Singing members must simply be able to match and sustain pitch. Prospective members are encouraged to attend a rehearsal and take us for a test drive.

Phoenix's once controversial anti-bias law has little impact

Few Phoenix City Council meetings have matched the drama and vitriol that filled the Orpheum Theatre more than a year ago as leaders approved an anti-discrimination ordinance with broad civil-rights protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender residents.

At the time, opponents and supporters of the law spoke at length about its potentially sweeping consequences. There were yelling and tears, and the ideological divide grew even wider.

Conservative groups and religious traditionalists raised fears that the measure could lead to a tsunami of lawsuits against small businesses or allow predatory men to enter women's bathrooms under the guise that they are transgender. Read more »

As host of the Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star 2014 game, the Phoenix Mercury invites Valley residents and visitors to attend All-Star Fan Fest on Friday, July 18 at CityScape in downtown Phoenix, from 4 – 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
