WHO/WHAT:          
Aunt Rita’s Foundation promotes public awareness of HIV/AIDS and raises and equitably grants funds to 17 Central Arizona programs that prevent HIV/AIDS or assist those living with the disease. Funds from 2014 fundraising efforts will be awarded to all agencies at the annual Red Brunch Gala event on December 6, as well as to report on Aunt Rita’s successes of the year.

Transgender student tells his story about homelessness. The National Transgender Discrimination Survey found that 19 percent of respondents had experienced homelessness at some point in their lives, 2.5 times higher than the general population.

City of Mesa Survey on Diversity and Inclusion Underway

The City of Mesa has retained the Morrison Institute for Public Policy at Arizona State University (MI) to conduct a citywide survey to assess the frequency of bias, discrimination, exclusion, mistreatment, and prejudice experienced by its citizens.  Since diversity and inclusion are core values for the City of Mesa Human Relations Advisory Board and Office of Diversity an objective measure of incidents of bias, discrimination and exclusion will assist the community with its efforts to encourage diversity and inclusion."  The survey takes place in January 2014.

Since taking office, President Obama and his Administration have taken significant steps to advance equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. You’ve probably heard of many of these accomplishments: repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” prohibiting anti-LGBT discrimination in hospitals and in housing, promoting international LGBT human rights, standing up against DOMA and then implementing the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Windsor.

That’s an important, and exciting, list of accomplishments over the last few years – but it’s missing one very important accomplishment: the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare. Read more »
