Angela Hughey receives 2013 YWCA Tribute to Leadership Award for Public Service

On Saturday, February 23rd, YWCA Maricopa County celebrated its 20th annual Tribute to Leadership event. Tribute to Leadership is the YW's largest fundraising event of the year, providing essential services to seniors, home-delivered meals to impoverished elderly and disabled adults, financial education to women and families, and essential awareness programs to eliminate discrimination and promote gender equity. The eleven individuals honored have all made substantial contributions to eliminating discrimination, empowering women, and serving as champions to their community. Group honors LGBT business leaders

Twelve people and businesses in metro Phoenix will be honored Friday at the second annual Spotlight on Success Local Heroes Awards.

The event is sponsored by Phoenix-based ONE Community, a group that promotes partnerships between the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and businesses.

This year’s theme, “The Year of the Woman, Celebrating our Past, Present, and Future,” will honor longtime couple Nelda Majors and Karen Bailey, who started a physical-therapy consulting business in 1975 in Texas, said Angela Hughey, ONE Community’s president and co-founder. Both are now retired.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton is scheduled to speak at the luncheon event at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown. Read more »

Human Rights Campaign announces the recipients of the 2012 Equality Awards

Three awardees include lesbian, transsexual and allied women.

PHOENIX—At the 2012 Human Rights Campaign Phoenix Gala, the organization’s biggest event of the year, three women will be commended for their contributions to the LGBT community as recipients of the HRC Individual Equality Award.

Dr. Rebecca Allison, Angela Hughey and Nicole Stanton represent the diversity of the support of gay rights—whether a transsexual, lesbian or allied individual, they all have contributed immensely to the LGBT community.

This year will mark the organization’s eighth annual celebration, bringing together an array of local supporters to “Be a Part of Equality,” the 2012 gala’s theme. Read more »
